Zero
Zero's life began at 0453 on August 17, 1986 in the Progenitor Lab known as Deep Horizon. He awoke, naked, in a glass enclosure. Wires and tubes ran from holes in the bottom of the cage into his skin.
Over the course of that day, he was told that he was to be a member of an elite police force, and that he was the property of the Technocracy. Brainwashing that had already been place in his head was reinforced during that day.
For the Progenitors and Iteration Xers, the experiment could not have gone more perfectly. They had created a fusion of man and machine that would be capable of withstanding public scrutiny. An utterly obedient enforcer that could take on mages but at the same time would be immune to paradox.
They had finally gotten around the normal block that was encountered in brainwashing. Most brainwashing subjects needed to be given exact orders, since their creativity and ability to think for themselves was obliterated. In many cases, this was desirable. In this case, however, the same thing that granted the target resistance to Traditional magick would also possibly block Technocratic procedures to send instructions directly to the subject's brain, so the subject needed to be capable of making decisions on his own.
What the Technocrats had done was attach a Device to the portion of his brain called the Delirium trigger, which causes most people to panic at the sight of a werewolf and forget they ever saw it. They then tampered with the response, keying it to react to the thought of betraying the Technocracy. They then keyed the device to speed the reaction so that it would only last one one-hundredth of a second, so that any thought of betrayal would not disrupt the subject's concentration in a potentially dangerous situation.
They had thought they had developed the perfect slave. What they hadn't counted on, was the subject's avatar's ability to hide itself. Zero's avatar is so deep within his psyche that the Technocrats missed the clues that the subject was capable of Awakening. During his first mission, in which he was escorted by a HIT Mark in an attempt to take out an Awakened politician that was allied with the Traditions, Zero's avatar came blazing to the surface. In that first fit of uncontrolled power, Zero caused the HIT Mark's circuitry to re-wire itself. The chain-gun that was stored in the HIT Mark's back overrode its hardwired inability to fire while concealed, and its upper torso and head were shredded by an unstoppable hail of bullets from within.
